“Hugo” Leads Oscar Race at 11, with “The Artist” Knockin’ at the Door with 10
The two front-runners in the Oscar derby are serendipitously a tribute to the early days of moviemaking. Earning eleven nominations, Martin Scorsese's "Hugo," is about a young boy who befriends the inventor of the cinema. A close second with ten nominations, "The Artist," is a silent black and white film set in the late 1920s when Hollywood was making the change from silent pictures to the talkies.
"Moneyball," centers on baseball and a general manager who, with the help of a mathematical genius, uses statistics to outmaneuver coaches, managers and professional scouts. This film, directed by Bennett Miller, scored six nominations.
Steven Spielberg’s “Warhorse,” a WWI film with a setting in England, claimed 6 nods including best picture and cinematography but Spielberg was snubbed for direction.
"The Descendants," Alexander Payne’s follow-up to “Sideways,” exhibits a family’s attempt to bond together during a tragedy and received five nominations. |

Last Wednesday, May 26, 2010 Chicago AMC River East Theater was the site of the Red Carpet event for the new film, “The Karate Kid.” The weather was a bit warm, but that didn’t bother exuberant fans who were treated to a special Chinese street carnival, karate demonstrations and special guests. Secretary of State Jesse White walked the red carpet as well as former 1985 Bears Super Bowl champion Richard Dent. The crowd cheered uproariously when Will Smith arrived as his presence was a total surprise. Will Smith and Jackie Chan ran back and forth giving high fives to the crowd while the continually jumped around− both were so much fun to watch.

If you’ve ever dreamed of attending the Academy Awards in Hollywood, there’s no need to book a fight. Located in Naperville, the Hollywood Palms Theater's Oscar Telecast Event last Sunday evening, Feb. 27, 2011 had plenty of glitz, glam, and even a Red Carpet.
The annual event serves multiple purposes. Primarily a fundraiser to benefit Variety Children’s Charity, it also provides a venue to experience the social aspects of the awards show along with the chance to ‘dress to the nines.’

‘Sold-out’ are the words event planners Angelique Barthel and Jamie Martin of Hollywood Cinemas strive for and that was the case here. Event goers were also very generous as the amount of money raised for charity through ticket donations, raffles and silent auction items, ($9,200) was doubled from the previous year.

The Red Carpet was rolled out for the movie, “Zombieland.” starring Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson in Chicago along with hundreds of zombies. The event was held at the AMC theater on Illinois Ave, in Chicago. It was great fun as I spoke with Eisenberg about working with Woody Harrelson. He told me that he was a great mentor on set and that he did help him with his scenes. We also chatted about another of his films, “Adventureland”. Harrelson posed for photos and chatted briefly with press.
